One of Alaska’s undeveloped state parks, Thom’s Place State Marine Park is found on the southern end of Wrangell Island in southeast Alaska. The state park is close to the town of Thom’s Place, population 20 (according to the 2010 census), and is 20 miles south of Wrangell itself. The park is nearly 1200 acres of unspoiled wilderness, perfect for the ultimate wilderness adventure. No overcrowding concerns, here. As a marine park, Thom’s Place is accessed only by boat or plane and features a sheltered anchorage perfect for fishing. In fact, abundant populations of salmon, halibut and a variety of other wildlife in the area led to settlement by the Hudson Bay Company in the 1800s.

Wrangell Island

Wrangell is one of Alaska’s newer travel destinations and offers you activities from fishing to sightseeing, and everything in between. Wrangell is sometimes called Alaska’s hidden jewel, with incredible scenery and abundant wildlife. The island is home to the Stikine River, where gold miners camped and garnets were unearthed. Protected bays offer excellent opportunities for kayaking and fishing, while miles of roads and trails offer endless hiking, biking, and camping possibilities. Another popular attraction is to view the area by air on a “flightseeing” tour, which introduces you to glaciers, fjords, cabins on remote lakes and more. The island also features the Anan Bear and Wildlife Observatory, located on an ancient Tlingit native fishing site, and the nearby Muskeg Meadows Golf Course, the only USGA-rated course in southeast Alaska.
