Sullivan Island State Marine Park

20 miles south of Haines, Alaska is the 2,720 acre Sullivan Island State Marine Park. Situated at the south end of Sullivan Island, this park is one of many recreation and marine parks in this outdoor enthusiast’s playground. The two bays provide great fishing, kayaking and hiking opportunities but there is no anchorage for larger boats.

Water sports

Due to tides and unpredictable weather the seas, inlets and lakes are sometimes hazardous. Kayaks or other boats with a shallow draft are probably the easier water craft to use in this area. Bring all boats above the high tide mark on any of the rocky beaches. This area has some of the best salmon fishing, but fishermen need to review the Alaska State fishing regulations. Fishing is not allowed within 300 feet of a fishing weir. Sullivan Island beaches are also a great place to swim.

Hiking

Sullivan Island State Marine Park is set in a beautiful marine area; however winds and weather are unpredictable. Always hike with a companion and tell someone your hiking time and itinerary. Carry the proper clothes to protect you from any type of weather exposure, and always carry extra food and water, even for a short hike. There are no developed camp sites in the park.

Open year-round, Sullivan Island State Marine Park is accessed usually by kayak or more commonly by air. There is no road access. This marine protected area is a great place to fish for salmon, hike the rugged shore, or picnic and enjoy the incredible Alaskan scenery.
