Shuyak Island State Park

Located on Shuyak Island in the state of Alaska, Shuyak Island State Park is brimming with adventure for anyone who visits. This park occupies over 47,000 acres, covering a large portion of the island, and is situated about 54 miles north of the city of Kodiak. It is home to many unique species of plants and animals and offers many man-made amenities to its visitors, as well.

Nature at Shuyak Island State Park

This park is home to part of the coastal forest system, which contains a single species of tree called the Sitka Spruce. There are also miles of protected coastline located within the park. Visitors regularly spot otters, whales, sea lions and even porpoises. In the forests that lie along the water, black-tailed deer and Kodiak bear are often seen.

Outdoor activities

Hiking at Shuyak Island State Park is challenging, but there are several trails. Shorelines are the easiest to traverse. Boating is only possible on days when the weather is clear, as the water is sometimes rough. Rescue assistance can take days, so boaters should use extreme caution and prepare for possible incidents.

Staying at the park

The park does offer camping, and visitors are encouraged to exercise self-sufficiency as staff is limited. There are also two cabins available for rental in the park. These contain wood-burning stoves and gravity showers.
