Security Bay State Marine Park

A visit to Alaska is great no matter where you go, but a stop by Security Bay State Marine Park can really blow it out of the water. This park is located on the northern side of Kuiu Island, and offers a great view of the Frederick Sound and Catham Strait. The village of Kake is about 20 miles away, and the park offers an unparalleled balance of nature and history.

Boating

If you plan on visiting Alaska for the boating, take special note of this state park. It provides a safe haven for vessels, and is one of the only ones in this open-water region. Boats can drop anchor in this area safely and easily.

The scenery

The scenery in Security Bay State Marine Park is also worth mentioning. There are two private landowners who hold stake in the park and each portion is completely undeveloped. There is also a historic native site within the park that is popular with visitors. Here, you can learn about the lifestyle of Alaskan natives throughout the years.

Other activities

Outdoor adventurers are largely on their own at this park. Hiking is allowed and very common, but there are no marked trails, so experience is recommended. Fishing in the park is also allowed, as long as you abide by state regulations. Picnicking and camping are also permitted, though there are no established campgrounds.

Spending a day or two at Security State Marine Park is a great way to experience Alaska at its best. Bring along an experienced friend if you plan on hiking or camping, since this park is rather rustic and undeveloped.
