Magoun Islands State Marine Park

Approximately 12 miles northwest of Sitka, Alaska and bordering the Krestof Sound, is Magoun Islands State Marine Park. This undeveloped marine park offers the outdoor enthusiast access to excellent fishing, camping, hiking, wildlife watching and hunting opportunities.

Activities

The only access to Magoun Islands State Marine Park is by watercraft. There are no developed campgrounds or visitor facilities at the park. Wilderness camping is not allowed during any time. Boating and kayaking are made enjoyable on the calm waters of the sheltered bay. Fishing opportunities are excellent and all Alaskan fishing regulations are applicable, while you try your hand at catching salmon, halibut or yelloweye. The protected bays also make for great swimming in the summer months and clamming is permitted. Take part in bird and whale watching, or explore the quiet wilderness that Alaska is known for on one of many primitive hiking trails.

Tips

When traveling anywhere in Alaska it is a good idea to carry extra clothing. The weather is often unpredictable, so make sure you are prepared for any mixture of snow, rain and sun. Alaska is notorious for large mosquitoes. Mosquitoes are usually most active in the early morning and at dusk, so always carry a supply of bug repellant. Many berries grow along the trails in the wilderness, some are poisonous and some are not, for that reason it is best not eat any of them. Since there are no facilities available at the marine park carry extra water and food, even for a short trip.

One of seven state parks near Sitka, Magoun Islands State Marine Park is the largest at 1,135 acres. An amazingly wild place, the marine park is perfect for a day of quiet exploring and other outdoor fun.
