Secluded anchorage
Located on Joe Mace Island in Sumner Strait, the marine park is not accessible from any road. This secluded park is miles from anywhere and is used primarily as an anchorage and recreation site. In this southeast Alaskan rainforest, sportspersons and photographers alike thrill at the incredible scenery and challenge themselves against the unyielding wilds and seas. Joe Mace Island Marine Park is open year round and offers excellent seasonal fishing opportunities for Pacific salmon, rockfish, yellow-eye snapper, ling cod, Pacific halibut and king, silver and pink salmon varieties. Alaskan fishing is legendary and for good reason. Fish caught here in past seasons have weighed in at several hundred pounds apiece!
Area Attractions
The nearest community to Joe Mace Island State Marine Park is Point Baker, a small non-native fishing village that subsists upon recreational food sources, such as deer, salmon, halibut, shrimp and crab. Regular water taxis and floatplanes shuttle between the village and Ketchikan, Wrangell and Petersburg. A trading post features a floating saloon and a bed and breakfast, as well as showers, marine fuel, a convenience store and a café. The trading post is open primarily from May through September.
