Independence Mine State Historical Park

Gold mining was a crucial element in Alaska's history, and the Independence Mine State Historical Park preserves these memories. Located just outside of Wasilla, this park consists of two gold mines that remained in operation until 1951; they are maintained with every detail left intact.
Take a tour
Multiple guided tours are available through the park. Explore the camp where workers lived and survived in this harsh environment. Stop by the Mine Manager's house, which now houses the Visitor Center and a museum. Here you can learn what it was like to work in one of Alaska's largest gold mines. See the trains that transported this precious commodity to Anchorage for export, and travel into a restored mine shaft.
Mine for gold
Gold mining is still allowed at Independence Mine State Historical Park, but it takes a great deal of hard work. Participate in a class where you can learn the proper technique to pan for gold. Treasure hunters are only allowed to use a pick and shovel here, but if you are lucky, you can take home a piece of history. The Assay Office provides detailed descriptions and exhibits on the other mining techniques used here, including deep shaft mining that was used during the mine's most productive years.
For a fun day filled with mining, history and exploration, visit the Independence Mine State Historical Park. Children and history buffs alike are sure to enjoy the many activities and sights available. With so much to do, plan for a full-day visit, so you do not miss out on any of the adventure.
