Grindall Island State Marine Park

One of Alaska's most beautiful state parks is Grindall Island Marine Park. Only accessible by plane or boat, the park offers a variety of recreational activities. Best known for its salmon and halibut fishing, the park also has a public use cabin and a mooring buoy. A wilderness trail travels from the forest at the cabin site to a lake in the middle of the island. Grindall Island was homesteaded and a fox farm operated on the island from the early 1920s into the 1950s.
Public use cabin and amenities
Located 18 miles from Ketchikan and 40 air miles from Craig, sits the Grindall Island public use cabin. The bluff that the cabin sits upon is abundant with hemlock, spruce and cedar. The area is best known for is king salmon. The weather is unpredictable, so bring appropriate clothing as the temperature during spring and summer range from the low 50s to 70 degrees. The cabin sleeps a maximum of eight people and is equipped with wooden sleeping platforms, a wood stove and table with chairs. Water availability is sporadic so bring plenty of it with you. There are endless opportunities for hiking and boating, and beachcombing and fishing are the main attractions.
