A Unique Island

Funter Bay is located on the northwest side of Admiralty Island, which sits to the west of Juneau, Alaska. Popular among hunters and fishers, the island is perhaps best known for its population of brown bears. Admiralty Island is known for having the world’s highest concentration of brown bears. Known as Xootsnoowu (thought to mean “burning embers fort”) by the Tlingit people, the island is a popular spot for airplane tours of the bear population. Wildlife “safaris” are also available, and each provides ample viewing and photographic opportunities. Angoon, a traditional Tlingit community of approximately 570 people, is the only settlement on the island. Most of Admiralty Island is a federally protected Wilderness Area known as the Admiralty Island National Monument. Several public-use cabins are maintained by the U.S. Forest Service on the island, as well as the Cross Admiralty Canoe Route which links the islands lakes. Another point of interest is the Point Retreat Light, on the northern tip of the island. It was set aside as a 1500-acre lighthouse reserve in 1901, and for many years was an important aid-to-navigation. Today, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Wilderness Park

Funter Bay State Marine Park itself is an undeveloped marine park with no road access. The 162 acres of the park provide ample opportunities to take in incredible scenery and abundant wildlife. The park is open year round, and offers excellent seasonal fishing and hunting opportunities. Warm summers and cool, wet winters make this an excellent anchorage and recreation site, as well as its relative proximity to Juneau.
