Chugach State Park

Located near Anchorage, Alaska, Chugach State Park sprawls over almost a half million acres, and is the third largest state park in the US. The park provides dozens of recreational opportunities for visitors, including motorized sporting, fishing, hiking and camping. Open year round, the state park brings in thousands of tourists every year.

Chugach State Park is divided into three areas. The North Park includes a lake and mostly mountainous terrain, making it popular with motor enthusiasts and hikers. The Central Park gives hikers a challenge with dozens of different trails of varying difficulties. The South Park is nestled against the Seward Highway and the Chugach National Forest.

Wildlife

Besides the flora of Chugach State Park, various wildlife thrives in the mountains and hills. Majestic moose clop through the underbrush, and elk and even massive grizzly bears claim the park as their own. Visitors must remember that wildlife is still wild, and that safety and respect of wildlife must take precedence over curiosity.

Camping

The state park contains many areas for campers, which are open year round and even cabins for the less adventuresome. Fees depend on the time of year, but all include bathroom facilities, fire rings, picnic tables and easy road access.
