Black Sands Beach State Marine Park

For a remote escape, the Black Sands Beach State Marine Park in Ketchikan Gate County, Alaska, offers a quiet, outdoor getaway. The signature black beaches sit alongside an undeveloped 640 acres of land that have been a well-known hideout since the 1930's. The area is filled with beachfront and thick forests.

Activities

Within Black Sands Beach State Marine Park adventurers will find fishing, hiking and tent camping sites. The area is inaccessible by vehicle, so there is no RV camping and the land has the feel of undisturbed natural habitat. Many people from the nearby Juneau area come here for the water activities as well. It is not uncommon to see kayakers, scuba divers and of course fishermen. Some access the park by small plane or by boat. There are picnic shelters and outhouses, but the area remains pleasantly undeveloped and undisturbed. Of course the black beaches are the most distinct and memorable feature. They gently hug the forest and the sea, and hikers often come here to trek alongside the water. For a fun adventure, there is a wood chip trail that crosses the nearby Blank Islands stretching out nearly half a mile. Many people combine a kayaking and hiking trip.

A classic piece of hidden natural wonders, the Black Sands Beach State Marine Park remains a draw for people who want adventure or to escape. Whether people go to hike, to fish, to kayak, or to relax, there are few places left in the world that offer such peace and solace.
