Afognak Island State Park

Visitors can rent a cabin at the beautiful Afognak Island State Park. This park was identified as one of the first conservation areas in 1892, and with over 75,000 acres of land, it takes up much of the east and northern areas of the island.
Wildlife
Known for the rustic mountain tops and dense spruce forest, Afognak Island State Park has beautiful wildlife to observe. Visitors can hang out and look for animals like brown bears and white-tailed deer, fish for salmon, hunt, hike or sit and enjoy the scenic view.
Public cabins
There are two public-use cabins in the park that are accessible in the warmer months. One is located on Pillar Lake, and the other is located on Laura Lake. To reach the Pillar Lake cabin, it is a 20-minute float-plane ride, while the Laura Lake cabin is a 35-minute float-plane ride away. During the winter months when the lake is frozen over, these cabins are inaccessible, but visitors are encouraged to take advantage of them during the open season.
Any private land close to Afognak Island State Park may require special hunting, fishing or camping permits. Visitors should brush up on wildlife safety, as the area is known for its bear population. Since there is no cell phone reception in the park, a two-way radio is always a good idea for keeping in touch. With a little preparation, this beautiful state park is the perfect getaway location for those who enjoy a bit of outdoor fun, recreation and adventure.
